Did you know, Total Shield Protection’s environmental window film installations can help save sea turtles? Believe it or not, they can. Keep reading to learn about how installing window film on your windows can help the sea turtle population survive.
Florida’s Sea Turtles
South Florida is home to 5 species of sea turtles, three of which (loggerhead, green, and leatherback) nest right here on our beaches. Their nesting season runs from May through October annually, during which time many female sea turtles come ashore to lay their eggs. Approximately sixty days after the eggs are laid, little hatchlings emerge, and not long after, each one sets off on the journey of a lifetime to reach the ocean.
Unfortunately, many hatchlings do not make it—why? Sea turtle hatchlings have an innate instinct to follow the light to help them navigate from their nest to the ocean shore. Historically, this light has always been the subtle light of the moon and stars reflecting off the ocean.
Nowadays their instincts betray them for modern structures that emit bright light including many beachfront homes, condos, and businesses. This light causes the new hatchlings to get confused and head further inland, to places where they are least likely to survive.
Due to the sea turtle’s endangered status, Florida’s new building code requires beach homes and structures with direct ocean views to limit the light transmission through their windows to 45% or less. This is where Total Shield Protection’s window film installation services can help.
Instead of having to go through expensive retrofit processes to install pre-treated windows, there are a number of affordable window film options that will meet Florida’s building code. In fact, Total Shield carries several brands of window film designed to control the visible light transmission of your home or business without compromising on the view.
Our environmental window film will not only help the sea turtles find their way home to the ocean, but will also help eliminate 99% UVA/UVB rays, cut your A/C costs, and protect your glass from inclement weather or break-ins. It’s a win-win solution. Call Total Shield today to see how you can benefit from one of our services and make the world a little safer for us and for the sea turtles!
