Fortunately, you are not powerless when it comes to home security. There are a few simple things you as a homeowner can do, and they all involve improving your doors and windows. Keep reading to discover some simple tips on how to improve your home’s security with home security film
1. Install Home Security Film
The first thing you should do to make your windows more secure is to install window film. Most vehicles and commercial buildings use these films to keep their windows from shattering in the event of a natural disaster, an accident, or worse. But they can also guard your home against attempted break-ins. If a would-be burglar tried to break in through a window, home security film is designed to keep glass shards together instead of letting them shatter and scatter. When professionally installed, no one will be able to tell that your windows are protected from top to bottom (unless you opt for tinted film, which Total Shield offers as well). Watch the video below for a demonstration of glass intrusion with and without security film applied…
2. Choose the Right Lock
The next step is not quite as straight-forward as covering your windows in security film, but it’s no less vital to the safety of your home and loved ones. There are seemingly countless types of locks on the market today that all offer differing levels of security, and it can be very hard selecting the right kind.
You may want to opt for a cheaper brand of lock, not thinking about the potential cost of that lock failing when you need it most. Cheap locks are easy for most home intruders to manipulate since they are usually less complex and unique in their locking design. However, this leaves your home susceptible to break-ins.
With security in mind, here are a few things to look for in a front door lock:
- It should be industry-rated as Grade 1.
- Your door jamb should be reinforced to match the security level of the lock.
- For deadbolts, the bolt should go one inch into the door frame.
For those who don’t want to sacrifice style for security, don’t worry! Many companies offer a wide selection of locks that can add a bit of flair to your front door. They don’t all have to be big and bulky.
3. Final Tips for Your Windows and Doors…
- Window locks are typically less secure than door locks, so they are easier to break into. However, by putting a six-inch dowel in your window, you will prevent would-be burglars from being able to open it more than six inches.
- We don’t recommend putting glass panels into doors. If you do, then make sure that they are at least three feet away from the doorknob. This will prevent intruders from being able to open the door from the outside.
- Make sure any air conditioning units are secure in their windows.
- Install window break alarms that will sound if a window is broken.
- Move valuables so they cannot be seen from the outside.
These are just a few simple steps you can take to improve the security of your home. Start with the doors and windows, and soon you will be sleeping soundly knowing that you, your family, and your belongings are all protected!
