Window Cleaning Tips and Tricks

Window cleaning

Looking for window cleaning tips? You might be if it’s been a few months since you had your windows professionally cleaned.

So you just had your windows washed by a Total Shield technician, and you can’t get over how great they look. But as time goes by you notice they don’t quite have the same shimmer they did right after their cleaning. Well, good news! We’re here to tell you that you don’t have to deal with dirty windows between semi-annual cleanings any longer. Of course, home cleanings don’t replace professional cleanings, but they can still keep you happy with the look of your windows in the meantime.

Keeping your windows sparkling isn’t as hard as it seems, but it allows us to make it even easier! Below are four helpful tricks for maintaining your windows in between cleanings…

Four Window Cleaning Tips In Between Professional Window Washings

1. Make Your Own Solution

We get it: why make your own cleaner when there’s always Windex somewhere in the house? With questionable blends of water, ammonia, and who-knows-what-else, we understand the impulse to simply go with a store-bought, brand-name cleaner. However, the most basic of window cleaning tips is that all you need to clean your windows is water, vinegar, and dish soap. Two parts water to one part vinegar and one part soap will get you the sparkling windows you desire, although there are plenty of ratios that will work just as well.

Simply spray your windows with your home-brewed cleaner before gently wiping it away. Then, to avoid any film build-up from the soap, rinse the window with a little bit of water.

2. Use a Soft, Static-Free Cloth

Are those streaks still bothering you? Just head to a nearby arts-and-crafts store and pick up a chalkboard eraser. Wiping one across your windows will get rid of those stubborn little steaks. In fact, any soft, static-free article of cloth (like a t-shirt or a microfiber rag) will remove streaks from a window. They do the trick by eliminating streaks while leaving no residue behind them. Oh, and coffee filters work too!

3. Squeegee, Squeegee, and Squeegee Some More

It’s an age-old problem: you want bright, shiny windows but are afraid of leaving ugly streaks if you clean them yourself. If streaks continue to plague you, even after using a chalkboard eraser on each and every pane, the answer is a squeegee of your very own. Most home improvement stores sell squeegees for inside the home. Just remember to dry the blade between each swipe and switch it out when it starts to get dull. A clean, dry squeegee is the key to shiny, spotless windows.

4. Sweat the Small Stuff

But shiny, spotless windows are only the beginning. The ideal window is shiny and spotless at any angle, at any time of day. Watermarks around the edges? Apply your homemade cleaner with a cotton swab or a small piece of cloth. A sticker you can’t quite remove all the way? Rubbing alcohol and vinegar will dissolve the gunk away. Noticing scratches? Use a non-gel toothpaste to buff them out. Looking through your windows at every angle will help you get them in tip-top shape.

Important:

PLEASE remember that these window cleaning tips are for interior cleaning only. Windows that require a ladder to reach must be left to your Total Shield technician. Clean windows are a wonderful thing, but they are not worth risking your safety for.
